Range Rover Evoque Timing Chain Rattle on Cold Start: What It Means and What It Costs to Fix in Melbourne

Land Rover Discovery Sport (same Ingenium engine as the Evoque) on the hoist at Universal Motors Thomastown for timing chain repair.

If your Range Rover Evoque rattles for a few seconds when you start it cold, especially first thing in the morning, that noise is almost always the timing chain. On the 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel engine fitted to most Evoques from 2015 onwards, the chain stretches early, sometimes well before 100,000 km. Left alone, it can jump teeth and bend valves, turning a $4,000 job into a $15,000 one.

That’s the short answer. If you want to know what’s actually happening inside your engine, what the fix involves, and what it costs to sort out properly here in Melbourne, keep reading.

What the rattle actually is

The Evoque’s Ingenium engine uses a timing chain instead of a timing belt. The chain links the crankshaft to the camshafts and keeps everything firing in the right order.

Over time, the chain stretches. The tensioner that’s supposed to keep it tight runs out of travel. So when you cold-start the engine, before oil pressure has built up, the slack chain slaps against its guides for a few seconds. That’s the rattle you hear.

Once oil pressure builds, the tensioner takes up some of the slack and the noise often disappears. That’s why people ignore it. It sounds harmless because it goes away. It isn’t harmless.

Why this happens so early on Range Rover Evoques

The 2.0L Ingenium diesel is the same engine fitted across the Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport, Velar, and several Jaguar models (XE, XF, F-Pace). It’s a great engine on paper. In practice, the timing chain is a known weak point.

We’ve seen Evoques come into our Thomastown workshop with:

The design itself is part of the problem, the chain is at the back of the engine (gearbox side), not the front. So replacing it isn’t a quick job. The gearbox has to come out. That’s why a lot of cheaper repairs cut corners, and why we see Evoques in here for their third chain before 100,000 km.

How do I know if it's the timing chain?

Here are the signs we look for:

You don’t need all of these. The cold-start rattle alone is enough to get it looked at.

Can I keep driving it?

Short answer: not for long.

A stretched chain throws off the timing between the crankshaft and camshafts. The engine compensates for a while, but eventually the chain can:

  1. Skip a tooth on the sprocket, engine runs rough, won’t start, or
  2. Snap entirely, the pistons slam into the open valves

The second outcome is what we call “interference damage”. On an Ingenium, that means bent valves, possibly a damaged cylinder head, and sometimes the pistons themselves. You’re looking at a rebuilt or replacement engine, often $12,000 to $20,000+.

Compare that to fixing the chain before it fails, and the maths is obvious.

What a proper timing chain repair looks like

This is where it matters who does the work. A timing chain job on an Evoque is one of the most labour-intensive repairs on the car. Here’s what’s actually involved:

  1. Drop the subframe and remove the gearbox (the chain sits at the rear of the engine)
  2. Lock the crankshaft and camshafts in position using specialist Land Rover tools
  3. Remove the timing cover, old chains, sprockets, tensioners, and guides
  4. Inspect the timing cover for wear, a stretched chain often scores grooves into the cover itself and that cover needs replacing too
  5. Fit a complete genuine kit: two chains (upper and lower), all sprockets, both tensioners, guide rails, new camshaft bolts, fuel pump gear, O-rings, blanking plugs, and rear main seal
  6. Set both chains to the correct timing marks (“bright links”) and torque every bolt to spec
  7. Refit everything, gearbox, subframe, driveshafts, exhaust, cooling system
  8. Refill with the right oil, run it up, and check for leaks

A proper job takes 7 to 9 hours of workshop time. A rushed job, silicone bunged on everywhere, generic parts, the timing cover not replaced, is exactly why we see Evoques back in for their second and third chain.

How much does it cost in Melbourne?

Here’s a realistic range for Range Rover Evoque timing chain replacement in Melbourne (2026 pricing):

Workshop typeTypical cost (AUD)What you usually get
Land Rover dealership$7,500 – $10,500Genuine parts, dealer warranty, longer wait times
Independent European specialist$3,800 – $5,800Genuine or OEM-equivalent parts, faster turnaround
General workshop / cheap quote$2,500 – $3,500Often aftermarket parts, no timing cover replacement, higher chance of repeat failure

At Universal Motors, we sit firmly in the independent specialist bracket. We use genuine or OEM-equivalent parts, replace the timing cover when it shows wear, follow the full Land Rover procedure, and back the work with our standard 12-month / 20,000 km warranty.

Why some Evoques need a second (or third) chain

We had an Evoque come in recently with 59,000 km on the clock, and it was already on its third chain. Two previous repairs had been done elsewhere, and both had failed.

When we stripped it down, we found:

  • Silicone sealant smeared everywhere it didn’t belong (a sign of a rushed gasket job)
  • The original worn timing cover left in place, so the new chain was already running against a scored surface
  • Cheap aftermarket guides that had already started to break down
  • A broken EGR bracket that someone had wedged in place with a screw

This is what cheap quotes actually buy you. The chain fails again within 30,000 km, and you pay twice.

A proper timing chain job on an Ingenium engine isn’t expensive because mechanics want to gouge you. It’s expensive because doing it right takes time, specialist tools, and genuine parts. Anyone quoting half the market rate is cutting one of those three things.

What to ask before you book a timing chain repair

If you’re getting quotes around Melbourne, ask each workshop:

  • Do you use genuine Land Rover parts or OEM-equivalent? (Aftermarket chains stretch faster.)
  • Will you replace the timing cover if it’s scored? (Most cheap quotes won’t.)
  • Do you have the Land Rover camshaft and crankshaft locking tools? (Without them, the timing won’t be set accurately.)
  • What warranty do you offer on the work?
  • Is the price quoted including GST?

Any workshop worth using will answer those questions straight. If you get vague answers, walk away.

Why Evoque owners across Melbourne's north come to Universal Motors

We’re a family-owned workshop in Thomastown, and we’ve been specialising in European and British cars for over 15 years. Land Rover and Jaguar work is a big part of what we do, partly because there are so many of them in Melbourne’s north, and partly because the Ingenium engine keeps us busy.

Owners drive in from Reservoir, Lalor, Epping, Bundoora, Preston, Mill Park, Campbellfield, Fawkner, Kingsbury, Mernda, Doreen, Greensborough and across the northern suburbs because:

  • We use genuine or OEM-equivalent parts on every Land Rover repair
  • We follow the full factory procedure, no shortcuts
  • We give upfront, written quotes with no surprises
  • All work is covered by a 12-month / 20,000 km warranty
  • We can also pay-later through Afterpay if needed

We’re not the cheapest in Melbourne. We’re the workshop that won’t see your Evoque again for the same problem.

In theory, the chain is designed to last the life of the engine. In practice, on the 2.0L Ingenium diesel, we regularly see chains stretching between 60,000 km and 120,000 km. Some last longer, some fail earlier. Driving style, oil changes, and oil quality all play a role.

If your Evoque is still within the factory warranty period (usually 3 years / 100,000 km in Australia, or 5 years on newer models), yes, the dealer should cover it. If you’re outside warranty, you’ll pay out of pocket. Independent repair won’t void your warranty under Australian Consumer Law as long as the work follows manufacturer specs and uses fit-for-purpose parts.

Workshop time is around 7–9 hours. Realistically, plan to leave the car with us for 2 full days, sometimes 3 if we find additional issues during the strip-down.

A short, gentle drive is usually fine. Avoid long trips, heavy loads, or hard acceleration. If the rattle is loud and constant, not just on cold start, book a tow instead. We can arrange that.

Yes. Discovery Sport, Velar, F-Pace, XE, XF, and most other Land Rover and Jaguar models. The 2.0L Ingenium chain issue affects all of them, same engine, same problem.

Normal diesel clatter is constant and even, present at all engine speeds. The timing chain rattle is loudest at cold start, fades within seconds, and often returns under load. If you’re not sure, bring it in, a 15-minute listen with a stethoscope tells us straight away.

A final word

We get the same call almost every week: “My Evoque is making a noise on cold start, do you think it’s serious?” The honest answer is, usually, yes, and the longer it’s left, the more it costs to fix.
If you’re in Thomastown, Reservoir, Lalor, Epping, Bundoora, or anywhere in Melbourne’s north, give us a ring. A 10-minute diagnosis now is a lot cheaper than a new engine later.
