Lack of battery care and maintenance combined with extreme weather has a way of bringing out the borderline batteries that seem to have been operating without issue. While a battery may be fine in mild weather, the first hot days of summer and the first cold weather starts can mean game over for batteries in poor condition. Battery care and maintenance is a year round requirement. You want to catch a bad battery before it lets you down, usually on one of the hottest or coldest days of the year.

It is always a good idea to have your battery tested before you buy a new one as a car battery may be discharged for other reasons. For instance an alternator fitted to your car may be faulty and could be charging at under or over the correct charge rate. If a battery is being undercharged it will obviously discharge the battery, especially if lights or other electrical equipment are being used. Often a warning light will illuminate on the dashboard to indicate a problem. If a battery is being overcharged, modern electronics systems can be damaged and fail, which may necessitate an expensive repair.

At Universal Motors, we use and recommend Energizer batteries.
